tp_smapi on T420 under Fedora 17

#1 Post by eduardowoj » Wed Aug 22, 2012 12:27 pm

Hello!

Recently I bought a T420 to replace an old Dell Inspiron 1525. I'm just in love with this new piece of hardware, and now I really understand why the TPs are loved.

I'm a linux user (but not quite a power user, by the way...), and I'm working with Fedora 17 Beefy Miracle. I want to install the tools to protect my TP, just the way the Thinkvantage does with Windows, like hdapsd (to make the TP APS work under linux, and protect my HDD) and mainly tp_smapi, to manage the tools. I found guides to install tp_smapi on F16, F15 and older versions, but I can't install it on Fedora 17. I manually downloaded and tried to install, but I only get this:

Code: Select all

[eduardo@Andromeda ~]$ su -c "yum localinstall tp_smapi-0.40-5.fc17.noarch.rpm --nogpgcheck"
Password:
Loaded plugins: langpacks, presto, refresh-packagekit

Marking tp_smapi-0.40-5.fc17.noarch.rpm to be installed

Where did you get the package from?

I typically try avoid installing packages from outside of my distro's repositories as there's no telling a) what they'll do to my machine b) whether they'll actually work.

I grabbed it from here: http://endur.fedorapeople.org/downloads/. I saw the thread here http://forums.fedoraforum.org/showthread.php?t=276687.

I saw you have a Thinkpad too. Can you help me?

If Fedora doesn't offer an officila package then I'm afraid I don't have many recommendations other than "compile it yourself". It should "just work", provided you've got the kernel-headers package installed.

Personally I would never trust an unofficial binary package of kernel module.
