Ubuntu 12.04/Mint 13 and X60s - brightness controls issue

If I use the applet for adjusting brightness, there are maybe 25 positions along a line for the slider to change screen brightness. Using the Fn and function keys there are only three levels for me. This is whether using Ubuntu 12.04 with Unity or Linux Mint with Cinnamon.

At a guess I'm going to have to look into IBM-acpi or better yet have someone else cut the work out. Similar explorations with a Toshiba laptop dragged on and led nowhere. But somewhere there's a line of parameter code to change to give me better control with the button isn't there?

Thanks for any help.

Try adding the kernel parameter in your grub boot line: acpi_backlight=vendor
and reboot.

This also worked for the X230 running Trisquel (based on Ubuntu 12.04LTS), thank you.

I noticed the brightness indicator doesn't move accordingly, though. Do you notice the same? Is there something else to fix this? It's not exceedingly annoying, just not making this trick perfect :)
