T61 7663-DL6 and FreeBSD 9.2

#1 Post by aoitenshi » Mon Jan 06, 2014 10:32 pm

Hello,

Yesterday I installed FreeBSD 9.2 on old 160GB spinning hdd ... I must say, it was the longest installation and configuration I ever had :D

5 hours of installing Xorg and another 5 hours of installing KDE4 (bad choice )

So here are few screenshots from my T61
KDE4

KDE4

and now my questions are :

- How do I use the tp_smapi on FreeBSD 9.2 ?
- And also how do I install HDAPS ?

TIA

P.S.
the last time I've installed FreeBSD was back in 2002, with FreeBSD 4.5, old Intel P2 350 MHz, 10GiB hdd, 128MB of ram :D
things was lot easier back then

10 hours for an install of the OS? That is insane. Did you do a net install?

Temetka,

installing the base OS is only approx. 20 minutes, but when I tried to install xorg, it's automatically search for dependencies from the internet ...
and the FreeBSD handbook already warn me about the installin time from the net ...
the second bad choice was the KDE ...

too bad I ran out of ssd :D

oh well, after 6 months using FreeBSD 9.2, I'll move on to Fedora 12

now I'm waiting for my ssd arrived after I've sent it for RMA last month ( to samsung USA ) and I'm going to install Fedora 12 in it.

You might want to install Fedora 20 instead. Fedora 12 is about six years old.

If you are still a KDE4 fan, Kubuntu LTS is a very good distro as well.

How did you find FreeBSD on your hardware?

Dekks,

All worked well, except for these points :
1. no APS and battery charging controller, every time I connect the AC adapter, it will keep on charging until 100%.
So I don't use batterry when using AC adapter.

2. I'm having difficulties when trying to use USB modem (huawei) or internal WWAN module (sierra mc8775) to connect to the internet.

3. I have no idea how to communicate with 2505 dock or 2504 dock with freebsd 9.2, so I'm just using the bare laptop without using one of those docks.

4. To get dual monitors function, you need to use nvidia driver from nvidia site.

that's all I can remember :)

thanks for the reply, i've been wanting to try a *BSD but have always been put off by the poor hardware compatability you see when researching beforehand.

Of all the *BSD family, OpenBSD has the best Thinkpad support. Many of the OpenBSD developers are using them, and the developers actually use OpenBSD as their daily driver (as opposed to another OS where the dev team codes in virtual machines on their MacBooks).

Suspend/resume, wifi, all work out of the box as long as you have Intel graphics.

I have been trying to find a version of XMMS for my own needs.

Where did you install that player from? God I miss xmms.

After a google search I came across this: http://qmmp.ylsoftware.com/

Far easier to work with than XMMS2 and support skins. Yay! Now I can have a minimal mp3 player again.

Temetka,

the XMMS came from KDE4, I just fire it up from its shorcut and copied equalizer files from winamp to my homedir ...
then ... voila, music to my ears :)
