z60m video issues Ubuntu

I have a Z60m with ATI graphics that I've installed Ubuntu on. In most cases everything works fine, but on one of the games that we use in the classroom the video freezes. I've tried to research what's happening and the best guess I have is that the ATI and linux aren't playing nice. The only other wild thought I have is that if the video memory was in any way shared, maybe that's it.

Any ideas? I guess I can throw XP back on it, but it's going away and I loved using open source in the classroom.
