I've been playing with the 14.04 daily builds, and it appears that even tho the official release date is April, it's essentially ready for prime time now, and is faster, I think, than 12.04, with very few bugs. (The only major one is that the WDE is not quite up to speed, it seems; because of a supposedly corrupt swap partition, the boot sector is out in the open.)

Curiously, I couldn't load it onto one of my systems because it was non-PAE, but I had no trouble running it on that system after swapping in a HDD loaded on another system.

Bottom line: X40 users now have a fast, reliable linux distro that's supported until 2019.

Is there a version that can be loaded on a non-PAE x40?

Thank you for letting us know that 14.04 is working on the old x40s.

Could someone please tell me how to install Lubuntu 14.04 on my X40? I do not have the option to swap drives like the original poster mentioned.

Here is what I have tried so far:
-verified md5 hash of iso
-tried making bootable usb with http://www.pendrivelinux.com/universal- ... -as-1-2-3/and http://sourceforge.net/projects/unetboo ... t/download
-used forcepae option as mentioned in https://help.ubuntu.com/community/Lubuntu-fake-PAE

The error I keep getting is "Unable to find a medium containing a live file system"

What I have left to try:
-burning the iso to a CD
-trying a different USB flash drive


If you have installed 14.04 Lubuntu, could you please post your installation method.

Ok i found the problem. I observed after a few times that when Lubuntu graphic was loading my USB key LED light was going off for some reason -- it turns out that is the reason I was getting the error. What I did to solve it was, as soon as the LED light on my USB key went off I quickly unplugged and plugged it back into the same USB slot which somehow made the USB come alive and keep loading! Anyhow I think this USB key does this because it used to have some security encryption on it. I am sure if I try a different USB key or burn the CD it will be easy to load 14.04 Lubuntu.

So the only trick you need is the forcepae to get it installed and that is not difficult.

Lubuntu 14.04 LTS 'Trusty' can use the boot option forcepae and can be installed using the standard installers.

After selecting language you arrive at the main menu of the installer. Click on F6

At the boot menu screen the options are

Try Lubuntu without installing (in the desktop installer but not in the alternate installer]
Install
...

With the Install choice high-lighted press F6. (This option needs less RAM than installing from 'Try Lubuntu')

A menu with a number of options appears. The option 'forcepae' is not there, so press Escape to close the list.

Now a string of options is visible, often with 'quiet' or 'quiet splash --' at the end. Add 'forcepae' to the string after the two dashes.

... quiet splash -- forcepae

Press return, and the installation begins.

I just successfully installed Lubuntu or lightweight version of Ubuntu 14.04 onto my Thinkpad X31. The difficulty is the Pentium M non-PAE CPU. As has been told, I followed the instruction from the official website:

Notice that, I used YUMI to make the bootable USB stick with Lubuntu and other Linux distributions installed. Only 32bit versions of Operating Systems are allowed for this machine. When I tried to find the forcepae option from the installation interface at the beginning, I couldn't use F6 or "installation options" to check the options. As has been pointed out, to add the forcepae option, I have to use TAB key to activate the options while the "install Lubuntu" was highlighted. After installation, I find all was done. The CPU flag has been automatically turned into PAE (you can check using "cat /proc/cpuinfo" to find the flags). So, nothing needed to do before updating packages. You don't need to read any other instructions given by other posts
