T41 with ubuntu

Thinkpad T41, model 2373HD2. Since this model has no built-in serial port, I use a USB to Serial adapter. I have just added ubuntu to my machine because of the expiration of support for Windows xp. Some of the programs I use require the serial port. The adapter works fine in xp but is not recognized in ubuntu. I realize this forum is primarily about Thinkpads themselves, but hope someone else uses linux and can give me a clue.

Morris, T41, 2373HD2

My guess is that you'll need to have the drivers for Linux/Ubuntu for that port to work. Your manufacturer may have a driver from their website or maybe one from the install disk if you still have it.
Whats the make/model of the serial adapter, maybe someone here has one similar and can guide you a bit better.

Why not use a port replicator or dock? I can see if portability or cost is a factor.

Run

Code: Select all

lsusb
in a console (obviously with the USB/serial adapter plugged in) and paste the output here and we'll take it from there

Portability is a factor, but I will use a port replicator if necessary

The make is ATEN, model UC-232A. I have the original disk, but the drivers are in source code, and I have no way to compile them. Drivers are labeled for RedHat. Any further help appreciated.

I am a linux newbie, and don't know how to do that.

I am not sure I am following along with this thread very well. However, it appears that the original poster is saying that he is still new to linux and isn't familiar with the process of pasting in commands.

Here are some links to help with using the "Terminal" in Ubuntu (the terminal is the place you go to paste commands):

https://help.ubuntu.com/community/UsingTheTerminal
http://www.wikihow.com/Open-a-Terminal-Window-in-Ubuntu

As far as doing the actual paste in terminal, that can be a little tricky the first time, too. Check out this link for clear explanation:
http://howtoubuntu.org/how-to-cut-copy- ... -in-ubuntu

Another cool trick for the linux beginner is to use your msn/live/hotmail/skype/whatever account with the free (for personal use, not business) Microsoft Office Online service at http://office.com/. When you open one of the web apps (Word Online, Excel Online, PowerPoint Online, etc) in Chrome browser, go to Tools > Create Application Shortcut. The result is that it is just like having Microsoft Office for linux. Excel Online is ten times better than calc, google docs, etc.
