ThinkPad W530: Windows 8.1 & Ubuntu 14.04 dual boot?

I never used Linux again when Windows 8 came out. Secure boot seemed like the end of dual booting. Now I was hoping to give it a try again.
I have a Samsung 840 Evo, so I have a little bit of spare room (100GB) to dedicate to Ubuntu.
Does anyone know the best way to set up a dual boot? And probably the easiest? I reinstall Windows quite often, every three months.
I have was thinking of buying a 128GB mSATA drive to dedicate to Ubuntu, so I can switch operating systems using the F12 boot menu. Which is probably the easiest way.
I am very good working with Windows. Linux in general perhaps not so much. I can do basic things like setting up a DNS, DHCP, SSH access without prompting a password and so on, using vim, wrote a few tutorials in the past.
But reading all the different dual boot guides available, gives me a bit the creeps.
