Android-x86 KitKat build for ThinkPad Tablets

#1 Post by twistero » Thu May 22, 2014 1:18 am

EDIT: Updated to 4.4 r1.
See latest post for a build that will boot on X41 tablets.

Most of the ThinkPad-Tablet-specific changes have been merged into the main Android-x86 project. This means many things will work out-of-the-box for vanilla Android-x86 4.4-r1 for X60/X61/X200 tablets, including the Wacom digitizer, tablet buttons and auto rotate. However, one specific change did not make it due to conflict with other models. The result is auto rotate works (in the wrong direction) even when the tablet is in laptop mode, and soft keyboards will not automatically pop up in tablet mode.

If you're compiling a build for ThinkPad Tablets, here's a patch to fix that problem: https://drive.google.com/file/d/0B08nIG ... sp=sharing

And here's an ISO image with that patch applied: https://drive.google.com/file/d/0B08nIG ... sp=sharing

As usual, the ISO does not include Google Apps.

Original post below:

This is a build of Android-x86 with several enhancements tailored to ThinkPad X60/61 tablets. This build will not boot on a X41 tablet.

Build 20140522

Download iso image here: https://drive.google.com/file/d/0B08nIG ... sp=sharing

Changes from vanilla Android-x86 KitKat RC2:
  • Wacom digitizer works as touch input.
  • When in tablet mode, soft keyboard will pop up when needed, and auto rotate works.
  • Tablet buttons: Esc is mapped to Back, Rotate is mapped to Home, Toolbox is mapped to Recent Apps, CtrlAltDel is mapped to Search. Up and Down (PgUp and PgDn on X41) are mapped to volume keys.
  • Keyboard layout: Mapped menu key (between right Alt and Ctrl) to the "Recent Apps" software button. Unmapped Fn key so pressing Fn alone no longer puts the system to sleep.
  • Includes tp_smapi kernel modules.
Note that this build does not include Google apps such as the Play Store. It's easy to add them once you install to hard drive.

Also, the known issues in vanilla Android-x86 still applies, especially this one:
The installer can't format ext3 filesystem.
I've only tested it on my X60 tablet. Bluetooth doesn't quite work, but pretty much everything else works well.

Please post any problems or bugs you encountered.

I'm a relative newbie at this sort of thing, so would like a little help.

How do you install this? Direct onto the X60T, or via a Virtual Machine?

I've been trying VirtualBox VM's on an X61 running 64-bit Linux Mint. I have had success with W7, W8 and have struggled with earlier versions such as W98, but have finally got them working. However Android 4.3 has always been a bit erratic and I haven't been happy.

I have just tried the 4.4 version above and have failed to get it to install correctly. I may well have set the VM up with the wrong options.

My question is whether I should persevere or should I install direct onto the hardware?

Grateful for any help or advice.

All of the specific enhancements in this build except the keyboard layout will only work on native hardware, although they shouldn't hurt in a VM.

It is certainly possible to install Android-x86 in VMs. How exactly does it not work? If you don't try to format a partition to ext3 in the installer, it should install just fine. Could you also try the vanilla iso image linked in the OP?

When setting up the VM, I have created a primary partition Ext2 of size 8GB and made it bootable. I have installed from the initial menu i.e. I haven't run in trial mode and then installed from there. I have Virtual box set to install it as Linux, Other Linux.

I just get a screen, part blue and part black that says Android at the bottom.

This is testing on the X61 non tablet version.

I suppose a better approach would be to get one of the X60T's that I have and make that dual boot, rather than mess with the VM.

I haven't had time to try the unmodified 4.4 version. As I said earlier, the 4.3 version that I have installed as a VM is very erratic - sometimes it starts and runs OK but slowly, other times it produces error messages during the boot.

I got it going. Not sure what I was doing wrong, but deleted that VM and started again and now it's running well enough to have a good look. I haven't yet got the networking up and running via the VM.

This is on the X61 non tablet model, so I'll try to find an X60T in the next few days and do a dual install rather than a VM.

@twistero

Could you perhaps post your grub entry for loading Android? Mine on a X41T is

Code: Select all

menuentry 'Android' {
        set root='(hd0,msdos3)'
        linux /android-2014-05-22/kernel root=/dev/ram0 androidboot.hardware=thinkpadtablet video=-16 SRC=/android-2014-05-22
        initrd /android-2014-05-22/initrd.img
}
and it drops to a command line, unable to boot into GUI. I've googled a bit and saw that others have similar issues but no solution to it as yet.

Hi ilakast, I don't have my X61t with me right now, but that entry looks fine. Is there any error messages? Anything telling in dmesg or logcat?

Thanks for coming back to me. Your reply prompted some action from my side and I've copied my log file under the appropriate community to be looked at. I am assuming that no one has successfully booted into KitKat as yet with a X41T.

BTW, out of curiosity, where did you source the above linked ISO from? I can't seem to find it under http://www.android-x86.org/download , is it true it's not there or have I gone blind?

I built that specific ISO, so naturally it's not on their official servers.

Right now I'm working with the Android-x86 project maintainers to incorporate the changes into the generic build.

Wasn't aware we had a developer on this forum, great! Unfortunately I couldn't give any feedback as it doesn't boot on X41Ts. In the meantime I installed

Code: Select all

android-x86-4.0-RC2-thinkpad.iso
and it works great. It's a huge improvement since my last post and this work is greatly appreciated as it breathes a whole new life to TP tablets.

Ah, you flatter me. I would not consider myself a developer just for being able to compile code. :)

I've built an image that should boot on X41t and other Pentium M computers. Head over here to download it.

The problem is that Pentium M does not support SSE3, which is mandated by Android for its x86 ABI. This build is compiled without SSE3, but any other app that includes x86 native binaries will most likely not work. Dalvik apps should run fine, though.

This build does not have some of the tweaks in the OP. I've been working with the Android-x86 team to add those ThinkPad Tablet device-specific features into their main build, and so far Wacom input and tablet mode has been added, so those are included in this build, but the others aren't yet.

I installed the main build on a flash drive for my x61 tablet. It booted but no stylus (or touch) and only with nomodeset. Bluetooth not working. I reverted to RC2 vanilla build because I had Bluetooth there. Thanks for your effort.

So you have finger touch on your X61t? Could you try starting the Terminal Emulator in vanilla RC2 and typing the following commands:

Code: Select all

su
wacom-input
Do you have any pen or touch input then?

The non-SSE3 build does not seem to be compatible with Google Apps. Google Services keep FCing, and apps cannot be installed from Play.

nice, thank you.

Stefan Seidel did most of the porting work on the old-old x41t/x61t image. I helped a little.
he seemed to lose interest, and I gave up because the build system is such a huge pain in the, er, head.

supposedly our changes were to make it into the main tree, but the last time (quite a while ago) I tested a universal kitkat image, none of it was there.

sounds like there have been some regressions (unfortunate but it happens) and also some great progress. hurray!

thanks for building these images, I know exactly how unfun it can be (but exciting when it goes right!)

to others: there have always been some weirdnesses in whether it works or not. there are sort of 3 main ways to run:
- live off a flash drive
- installed on a flash drive
- installed on internal HD
the weirdness being that for different people, it's not always clear why one of the above will work ok but the other 2 will be broken - and the fact that for different people, it's not the same which of the 3 will be the working one.
go away.

I've been submitting patches one by one to the Google group / mailing list. So far, wacom-input and tablet-mode have been added to the main tree, and starts on boot as appropriate for X41/60/61/200 tablets.

Firstly, I'd just like to say thanks for putting in the effort to compile all these patches. We all appreciate it :)

Okay. So I'm running android x86 on my x201 tablet. I've got it running, added a GRUB menu entry and everything. However, my wacom digitizer isn't registering. I'm sure this is because of my obscure model is just not supported but is there anything that might possibly work to alleviate this problem? It seems like my laptop's setup isn't far from currently supported laptops so I'm hoping there might be a few things I can try before I give up completely.
Any help would be appreciated!

You're welcome :D

Everything required to support X201t should already be there. Could you try the following:

Open "Terminal emulator"
At the prompt, type in:

Code: Select all

su
(Allow superuser request)

Code: Select all

wacom-input &
tablet-mode &
Then, see whether the digitizer works.

HI, I installed the 4.4r1 alright, but Google Play does not work on it (even if it seems to install fine). When I click on Google Play, it says it has to stop. Therefore I cannot associate a google account with my installation.

Also, every time I restart, the configuration setup starts again.

Any suggestions?

Tried it, totally worked. thanks :) more resulting questions though.

first, the pens calibration drifts depending on screen location. I turned on "show touches" to see what was going on. the touch point is directly underneath the pen tip at the top left screen corner, then drifts above it when dragging the pen down to the bottom left corner, and to the right of the pen tip in the top right screen corner. the distance tops at about an inch in the bottom left, top right and bottom right corners. I tried the calibration app, no luck, tried editing the GRUB menu entry file's dpi and resolution settings, no luck as well.

second, the second terminal entry you had suggested "tablet-mode &" didn't seem to make any changes. I'd assume that's to activate the screen rotate function but the screen remained as it was when I flipped it around.

third, after restarting android the terminal entries are re-set and have to be entered again. I mean, this is not a huge deal, but id like to know if there is a way to have them loaded on start up somehow.

also, this is my executable file's code for my grub menu entry if its relevant to anyone:

Code: Select all

#!/bin/sh

echo "$0: Android-2014-08-14 (on /dev/sda4)" >&2
exec tail -n +4 $0

menuentry "Android android-2014-08-14 Normal (on /dev/sda4)" {
        set root=(hd0,4)
        linux /android-2014-08-14/kernel root=/dev/ram0 \
        androidboot.hardware=android_x86 acpi_sleep=s3_bios,s3_mode \
        SRC=/android-2014-08-14 DPI=160 UVESA_MODE=1280x800
        initrd /android-2014-08-14/initrd.img
}
again, any help is appreciated!

Is the drift the same in another OS or is it specific to Android? Does it depend on screen rotation? I didn't write the wacom-input program, so don't really know how it works.
Mr.Pants wrote:second, the second terminal entry you had suggested "tablet-mode &" didn't seem to make any changes. I'd assume that's to activate the screen rotate function but the screen remained as it was when I flipped it around.
tablet-mode makes Android aware of the screen position. When the screen is folded down into tablet mode, auto-rotation is enabled, and software keyboard would pop up when clicking on text fields. When the screen is up in laptop mode, auto-rotation and soft keyboard are both disabled.
Mr.Pants wrote:third, after restarting android the terminal entries are re-set and have to be entered again. I mean, this is not a huge deal, but id like to know if there is a way to have them loaded on start up somehow.
If everything works as expected, I'll make these commands run at boot for all X201t models, and submit a patch to Android-x86. Ideally, I would like someone with a finger-touch enabled X201t to test this as well.
For now, you could try looking for an app that run scripts at startup.

cp652 wrote:HI, I installed the 4.4r1 alright, but Google Play does not work on it (even if it seems to install fine). When I click on Google Play, it says it has to stop. Therefore I cannot associate a google account with my installation.

Also, every time I restart, the configuration setup starts again.

Any suggestions?
Is this the vanilla 4.4r1, or the ThinkPad-specific patched image? The patched image does not come with Google Apps.

Hello,

Could someone can help me ?

I have an Thinkpad X200 tablet I downloaded :

android-x86-4.4-RC2-thinkpadtablet-20140522.iso
or
android-x86-4.4-RC2.iso

and they loop in the ANDROID logo ... nothing more ... I wait probably 10 min ... nothing (like this video https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OKXTD1-fqbc)

When I used the android-x86-4.0-r1-thinkpad.iso or android_x86_4.4r1-ThinkPadTablet.iso it start ... no multitouch but it started ... tried also the command
Code:
su

(Allow superuser request)
Code:
wacom-input &
tablet-mode &

but no touch screen ... (I precise it work on windows 8 or7 )

See latest post for a build that will boot on X41 tablets.

And here's an ISO image with that patch applied: https://drive.google.com/file/d/0B08nIG ... sp=sharing

As usual, the ISO does not include Google Apps.
Hi, I'm new to all this so please bear with me if some of my questions are dumb.

I tried the live CD on an x61 tablet with the super high resolution panel in it and the Wacom digitizer doesn't work.

Do I have to enable it somewhere or boot the live CD in vesa mode, or something? Any help to get Android running on this would be greatly appreciated.

I truly believe Android can work as a desktop OS. Maybe not on an enterprise level, but certainly for the casual netbook/tablet user.

Thanks in advance for the help.

UPDATE: I did manage to get Android installed to the HDD and booting. Still no touchscreen input though. I then tried to get G' apps working but no luck. I think it may be a while before Android is ready to go prime time on the x86 architecture.

Did you try running wacom-input and tablet-mode in Terminal Emulator?

Sorry it took a while to respond, I've been busy at work.

No I haven't tried that, what exactly would I have to enter in terminal emulator for the x61?

Has anyone been successful getting G' apps to work?

For now let's focus on wacom-input first.

Open "Terminal emulator"
At the prompt, type in:

Code: Select all

su
(Allow superuser request)

Code: Select all

wacom-input &
And see whether the Wacom digitizer works afterwards.

However, these commands should run automatically if an X61 is detected. Could you also post your machine's Machine Type & Model, found on a sticker on the bottom? It should be 7 characters in the form of [4 digits]-[3 letters/digits]. Also, if you go to settings -> about phone, is the "model number" the same as your MTM?

Ok I tried the su, then wacom-input & thing but no luck.

The model number of my thinkpad is: 7767-96u

about phone> "model number" is 776796u
