64-bit VIrtualization on ThinkPad Edge E420; Xubuntu 14.04;

#1 Post by Ackbach » Mon Jul 28, 2014 9:52 am

I have a Lenovo ThinkPad Edge E420, 1142 model. I run Xubuntu 14.04 as the base OS.

I would like to run Windows 7 Pro from within a virtual machine, say, VirtualBox. Unfortunately, in order to install the 64-bit version (which I would much prefer), I have to have hardware virtualization enabled. So, I went into my BIOS, and the virtualization features are not selectable (maddening! Why have an option there if I can't change it?). I googled, and discovered that sometimes you can update the BIOS to enable those options. So, I created a bootable disk with the Lenovo BIOS updater on it, and successfully updated the BIOS. However, the virtualization options are still not selectable.

I'm not married to VirtualBox. If there's another (preferably free!) virtualization technology available that will let me install Win 7 Pro, 64-bit, I'm all ears. Or if you could help me enable virtualization on my existing machine, I'd be much obliged. Or if you have another solution entirely, I'd love to hear it.

Thanks very much for your time.

I think I've answered my own question: I have to have the Supervisor Password for the Lenovo ThinkPad BIOS in order to enable virtualization. Otherwise, I'm pretty much dead in the water.
