Windows has a neat driver/software for fingerprint that allows using fingerprint instead of boot up password and also to boot laptop via the fingerprint instead of using power up button. Anything like that for Linux OS? I use Fingerprint GUI to use fingerprint in OS, but I don't think it allows such an option.

What is the software that Microsoft has to boot via the fingerprint reader? Do you have a link for this driver.

Even if this documentation is specifically for Arch, i believe it should be pertinent for any linux distribution. Please post results if you get this working.

Please also note (speaking of my experience) once the fingerprints are stored in the laptop, they will work across all operating systems. I've had my T420 for 2 years now and i've only set up my fingerprints once.

I don't know of any Linux software that will enable fingerprint boot. However, IIRC, once fingerprint boot is enabled in Windows, it will remain enabled, even if the hard disk is changed, or Windows is wiped out. With my W530, the settings seemed to be stored in the BIOS, and there was also a setting to wipe out the data.

You are correct.

But i believe it is not stored on the BIOS settings but in the fingerprint chip/module itself. Else, updating your BIOS should break this behavior. I flashed my BIOS once already and it kept the behavior/memory, therefore it would be logical to assume that the fingerprint device is standalone. I believe Windows front-end software (and Linux CLI fprint software) only allows you to store/modify/delete fingerprints in the module memory.

+1 for fp chip ... i installed win7 or win8 , then fp software and now i have fp boot option ... removed windows installed linux and still have it .
