Invalid tar magic with tar command. Help.

#1 Post by Blender » Fri Jan 06, 2017 1:35 am

I'm trying to extract a tarball and I get the following error..

"tar: Invalid tar magic"

My syntax is tar -xzvf file.tar.gz

Any thoughts?

Try gunzip, maybe it'll give you a better error message, but most likely the file is damaged.
