ubuntu = dead t42?

#1 Post by rossman » Sat Jun 18, 2005 7:11 am

Just wondering if running ubunto could kill my t42. Seems unlikely but just thought I'd ask.

It died the first time about a week ago. It locked up twice while I was streaming music using gxine. After the second lock up it would not start - no boot screen, no display, power light illuminates, fan powers on, hard drive clicks a few times, then...nothing. I called ibm customer service and they had me send it in. I received it back yesterday and it seemed fixed.

Just a few minuites ago it died again, this time with no warning, same symptoms as before. IBM is sending out a box again for return. Another week without my laptop :(.

Could some sort of power setting cause it to overheat??

I have Kubuntu Hoary running on my T42.
Works like charm, powermanagement, graphiccard etc.
Fan is running when temperature is higher than a certain level and then its running, but this is not new to the community.

I think your tp has an error.
Do you have still an dual boot system ?
What happens under windows ? Same as under linux?
Or try knoppix live cd.
Which version of Ubuntu. I tried beta of breeze and got into troubles with broken updates. Hoary instead is running very stable. No problems so far.

Next questions would be:
What about your temperature ?
Do you have ibm_acpi 0.11 running with swich experimental=1 ?
With that you can cat your sensors in your tp, which gives you the values of certain sensors.

Hope that helps for the moment,
regards,
Andreas

dual boot - XP Pro / ubuntu hoary
it won't boot at all so I can't get to windows or linux
I don't know the temp, I was not monitoring it.
I did not set "experimental=1" should I?

I plan to wipe the partition and reload ubuntu hoary.

Thanks for your help.

Is Knoppix loadable, bootable ?
Perhaps try this, just to see that the machine itself is running fine.

And yes, if you have a running system again, you should run ibm_acpi with switch experimental=1 (newest version of course).
With that, as I wrote, you can view all the sensors in your machine.
You have 8 sensors, not all of them acivated / used.
First is CPU, fourth is GPU.
These two values are the interesting ones for me.
Most times CPU is around 40 degress or a little below. GPU is higher, around 44 degress and that is the reason why my fan is running (I think).

But first try to restore your machine :-)

You mentioned gxine. I have Kubuntu Hoary running and recognized that Kaffeine (front-end player based on xine) is still running as a process after you closed the app.
And consumes a lot of % of your cpu, rising the temperature.
I always had to shutdown kaffeine with the process table to ensure, all is closed, otherwise my macine was heating up to 64 degress, fan was going crazy etc.

Just some of my ideas right now, hope that helps

The machine is not bootable from the system recovery boot disk I created so I doubt it would boot from a Knoppix disk.

According to IBM's on-line repair status my t42 has been fixed and was shipped out today. I should have it tomorrow or Monday. I hope they got it right this time.

Thanks for your ideas Andreas.
