different Xubuntu install

#1 Post by bayou self » Wed Jul 25, 2018 1:51 pm

I've installed Xubuntu (18.04) plenty of times for dual-booting with Windows 7, and it always detected that OS and presented me with the option of installing Xubuntu alongside Windows.
However, using the very same flash drive, this time was different, the computer being an X200 with Win 7 Pro x64. I was given the following options:
  • Erase disk and install Xubuntu
  • Encrypt the new Xubuntu installation for security
  • Use LVM with the new Xubuntu installation
  • Something else
I clicked on Something else and went into Gparted. I'm not confident enough to create partitions and such.
Any idea why the difference?

It's possible that the entire disk is already partitioned, so there's no free space to install Linux.
Planned Purchase: T480s i5-8350 FHD Touch
Impulse Buy: Thinkpad not named for safety reasons

I'll bet you are exactly right! As it happens, though, my aborted attempt to install Xubuntu completely wiped the HDD. This time, as I re-install Win 7, I hope I can leave some room for the Linux. Wondering if I can shrink the Windows partition from within Win 7, or if I will need to do it from FreeDOS or something.

Thanks, that was it! Used Gparted to shrink Win partition.
