I have a T480. I run Pop OS (Ubuntu variant). I don't have Windows installed at all. I am not specifically having the problems referred to. Do I need to do anything? if so, what? (assume that I don't have any ability to update my system via Windows).

I sadly do not own a T480 like you do :( So never could use LVFS, Linux Vendor Firmware Service, myself, but your machine is supported by Lenovo through LVFS. All your T480 bios and firmware updates on linux are officially supported by Lenovo. Everything you need to know available on https://fwupd.org

LVFS is one of these recent developments in which vendors no longer are leaving us proud linux users behind
