several 600X issues: pppoe on boot, problems with reboot..

hi, i've been trying to research these topics, but i figured i might as well ask for a bit of help while i am at it..
I am running Debian Sarge, with a 2.4 kernel, on a thinkpad 600X
1. when i use the restart/reboot command (from the Actions menu), the computer always hangs at the IBM boot splash screen. what's up with that?
2. what is the ideal kernel to use in this machine? right now i'm using the i386 kernel but i noticed that there is a 686/pentium kernel. shouldn't i be using that one?
3. i'm working on the pppoe on boot issue, so there's little i can really say about it except that it worked when i first installed linux, but it doesn't anymore. weird. the boot log tells me that i should use etc/network/interfaces rather than ppp_on_boot.dsl, because there is something wrong with it. well, i'll figure it out.
thanks. no doubt i'll be back with more!
