XF86Config file for ThinkPad 701C?
Hey,
I got [censored] Small Linux installed on my 701, and I had to install XFree86 in order to get the video working. Now, this is my first time trying to install Linux, so I got a XF86Config file off the internet.
I've got video, but the picture flickers and scrolls, just like an old tv that doesn't quite have the right signal.
I'm stuck, cause I have no idea how to fiddle with the numbers in the XF86Config to set the modes.
Does anyone have a working XF86Config-4 file for a 701C that they want to share?
Rob

google may have an answer
http://www.citi.umich.edu/u/rees/openbs ... onfig-701c
This seems to be working. Specifically had to specify 16bit color in the file. BTW, I googled 'XF86Config Thinkpad 701c'
Good luck

Okay, I thought I would suggest one to try. Since it does not work for you, we'll have to try something else.
Have you tried running the basic config tester under X? I think if you installed Xorg, you can run 'Xorg -configure' and it should bring up a basic X environment of white X on gray background. Then Ctrl-Alt-Backspace to close. I am assuming you have not done this before, so forgive me if I am shooting below your level.
Have you checked to see if the video card in the 701C is supported? You may have to go back to an older version of X to get that old of support. I think I read somewhere there have been some deprecated cards and support for some older hardware....
FWIW, I do not have any time right now, but will try to install FreeBSD on my 701C, or OpenBSD, and go for X on that. I'll prolly run into trouble with disk size. I may have to go with DSL as well. Again, I'll get to it later. If I get it working I'll be quite happy to help.

I know you said you tried all the X configs from the net, have you seen this one too?

Yeah I've tried that one config. I've also tried running XF86Configuration. I'm running the version that works with [censored] Small Linux.
But, I found out if I start it up with an external monitor, then switch to the LCD, it works fine. It seems like it's some kind of refresh issue, but after playing around with the settings, it doesn't get any better.
I've decided I want to try OS/2 Warp 4 on this laptop, so I'm gonna hold off on linux for now. Too bad I can't get my wireless cards to work on OS/2.
Thanks for the help! Don't worry about taking the time to make it work on yours (unless you want the challenge!)

Very curious on the X config. I cannot recall what is necessary to set the refresh rates under the XConfig tool. Sorry.
OS/2 Warp 4 should be fun, although a tad slow maybe. I think Big Warp Guy here in the forums might be able to point you to wome wireless card support for OS/2.
FWIW, I put Warp 4 on my T22 for a time, and it was AMAZINGLY fast and smooth. I never had the time, for other reasons, to get into wireless and the networking stuff.
