FC4 locks up on my T42

#1 Post by byron » Wed Jan 04, 2006 1:34 pm

randomly my thinkpad just locks up when i'm in X. usually just when i'm browsing the web or something. when it locks up.. its a hard lockup and nothing works (CTRL+ALT+F1...nothing).i really don't have anything special going on... basically what i have is this:

tpb (thinkpad buttons app)
thunderbird
firefox
madwifi (for my a/b/g card)
wpa_supplicant
xmms
gaim
azureus
adobe reader

and i added the lines below to my xorg.conf file to enable the scroll button...

Option "EmulateWheel"
Option "EmulateWheelButton" "2"
Option "Emulate3Buttons" "true"

i just added acpi=off apm=off to my grub.conf file.... so i'm going to run it like that for a while and see if that helps... if it does i need to figure out which one is causing the problem and enable the other. i don't like the fact that I can't see my battery status in X. which module controls that? ACPI or APM?

if it isn't a power management problem, my next idea was to update the video drivers..

anyone else have any ideas?

ACPI and APM are both power management utilities, with APM being much older and slowly being superceded by ACPI. Older machines (pre 1998) usually don't support ACPI, and are disabled during bootime by linux.

Has it locked up since you disabled ACPI and APM?

I would recommend you disable APM and keep ACPI going. At least in fedora, there are two /etc/init.d scripts that control these.

#>> /sbin/chkconfig --list | grep apm
apmd 0:off 1:off 2:off 3:off 4:off 5:off 6:off
#>> /sbin/chkconfig --list | grep acpid
acpid 0:off 1:off 2:off 3:on 4:on 5:on 6:off

Issue as root:
#>> /sbin/chkconfig apmd off

With ACPI, if you
#>> cat /proc/acpi/battery/BAT0/state
present: yes
capacity state: ok
charging state: charged
present rate: 0 mW
remaining capacity: 35230 mWh
present voltage: 12482 mV

You can see more information. Have you updated to the latest kernel using yum -y update?

ya.. it still locked up when them both disabled. next i updated to livna.org ATI drivers/kernel modules.

i recompiled the most recent kernel yesterday and the jury is still out. i will report back in a couple days.

Turn logging up and see if the syslog (/var/log/messages) has anything useful in it.

Did it just recently start locking up, or do you have the problem since purchase? If you always had the problem I'd suggest running memtest for a day or two. I had a similar problem and changing the ram fixed it.

Since you apparently use binary-only X drivers, you could try the open source one and see if the problem persists.

ive always ran windows on my thinkpad. i recently bought a bigger hdd, which is the reason i am able to do a dual boot now.

since recompiling the latest kernel it hasn't bombed yet. (knocks on wood).

still no luck. when it locked up today.. i wasn't even doing anything.. just had firefox and gaim running. it was just sitting on the coffee table in front of me while i was watching football.

anyone care to suggest something that might help me narrow down the problem.

here are a few things that are in my /var/log/mesages. this one gets dumped in the log every time i log into X.

Code: Select all

Jan 8 14:28:19 localhost gconfd (byron-3075): Resolved address "xml:readonly:/etc/gconf/gconf.xml.mandatory" to a read-only configuration source at position 0
Jan 8 14:28:19 localhost gconfd (byron-3075): Resolved address "xml:readwrite:/home/byron/.gconf" to a writable configuration source at position 1
Jan 8 14:28:19 localhost gconfd (byron-3075): Resolved address "xml:readonly:/etc/gconf/gconf.xml.defaults" to a read-only configuration source at position 2
Jan 8 14:28:28 localhost gconfd (byron-3075): Resolved address "xml:readwrite:/home/byron/.gconf" to a writable configuration source at position 0
this was the last thing in /var/log/messages before the last lock up:

Code: Select all

Jan  8 14:09:56 localhost kernel: inode_doinit_with_dentry:  context_to_sid() returned 22 for dev=hda6 ino=1407870
Jan  8 14:09:56 localhost kernel: inode_doinit_with_dentry:  context_to_sid() returned 22 for dev=hda6 ino=1407871
recently i replaced the hdd in my thinkpad.. i bought a new 80gig hitachi travelstar 5400rpm drive.... any chance a bad drive could the be cause? any utilities you guys know of i could run to test the drive?

You could run the smartctrl utility to check out the HDD. :)

installed the smartmontools.... any advice on tests to run... it looks so powerful that i could spend weeks reading documentation on how to use it.

Two possible causes, I suspect a hardware problem and / or video blanking and I am probably wrong BUT ... it does not hurt to try something new as long as it is not a hammer, right? Try re-distributing your IRQs, some people have problems with the default setting since thinkpads have all the hardware on irq 11. See this link for a suggested distribution. To do this, you go into the BIOS through F1 at boot and go into the config menu. This page has much more specific info about the 2 potential problems. Be sure to read the section on video blanking. YMMV

change all my IRQs this morning.... it locked up tonight.

it was wierd though.. i'm not sure i didn't notice this before b/c i didn't have anything running that was chewing up any bandwidth but i had azureus running and i was on AIM and it locked up and i noticed the WLAN LED on the bottom of the display continued to flash, but the keyboard, trackpoint, and LCD was completely unresponsive. i got on a different computer and logged onto a different AIM s/n and my username contineued to stay online for 5 minutes or so.. after that i just did a hard power down and i'm back in windows for now.

im starting to run out of ideas... i've been reading/posting at fedoraforum.org and it looks like i'm not the only one having problems... but with something like this its hard to tell if our problems are actually the same b/c there are no logs to report what is actually happening.

anyone more ideas?

to add insult to injury... things are just getting worse.

while using azureus again tonight in Fedora it popped up lots of notices about how it couldn't write the files (what i was downloading) because suddenly they are now read only. this is after it had been downloading with no problems for 15 min or so.... my user had RWX permissions to the entire directory (it was saving to my home directory anyhow), so i know the directory really isn't read only.

that really had me worried so i downloaded hitachi's drive fitness test to run on my drive (hitachi travelstar). booted to the drive fitness disk and ran the most extensive test and all tests passed with no issue.

so now i reboot into fedora and as its checking file consistency it throws up "UNEXPECTED INCONSISTENCY: run fsck manually"

so i run fsck and let it does its thing, restarted and i can get in... but this is the second time today i've seen this darn "UNEXPECTED INCONSISTENCY" message... here are some pieces from my logs...

anyone??? i'm really close to kicking fedora out the door... as this is becoming extremely frustrating. my windows side shoudn't be the stable side of my dual boot.
