I don't have access to that laptop, but do you have reason to believe it won't work?

Because if it's the video card you're worried about, this page claims things will be fine. Trying out the dapper livecd won't be too hard, will it?
Happily picks up his three grand; unhappily hands it over to another company.

You can use the Kororaa live cd to test XGL. XGL is enabled by default when you boot from this cd. You don't have to do anything else. The link is http://www.kororaa.org/

On my t43p, it works with occasional freezes..

I've also tried kororaa on my T42. It works perfectly with gnome, not KDE.

I'm planning to get it working on my gentoo.

I have XGL/Compiz running on my Breezy installation of Ubuntu (5.10). If you look at my signature below, I am also running the X300.

There is better support for XGL/Compiz in Dapper but I have gotten it to run without any problems.

Since I'm sure there are going to be a few people wondering how I got XGL/Compiz working with Ubuntu Breezy, I figured I would go ahead and put together a quick guide on what I did.

First, you have to make sure you have the newest fglrx drivers installed for your ATI card. I followed the guide at http://wiki.cchtml.com/index.php/Ubuntu ... tion_Guide and used Method 2 that is half way down the page (version 8.24.8 )

Note: Make sure you read the note at the bottom of the ATI guide for instructions on how to keep your madwifi drivers intact (because you will be removing the linux-restricted-pacakge).

Once you have verified the fglrx drivers have been installed, follow the guide at http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php? ... compiz+ati to install XGL/Compiz.

Whenever you get to the point in the guide where it asks you to edit the gdm.conf, make sure you use the following settings since you are using an ATI card (the guides settings are for Nvidia cards):

Find the Servers section and comment out the line that reads "0=Standard" then add "1=Xgl".

Code: Select all

[servers]
#0=Standard
1=Xgl
Next, at the bottom of gdm.conf, make sure you add the following at the end of the file:

Code: Select all

[server-Xgl]
name=Xgl server
command=/usr/bin/Xgl :1 -fullscreen -ac -accel glx:pbuffer -accel xv:pbuffer
flexible=true
Note: For ATI, do not enable composite in xorg.conf

It is quite possible to install XGL on a T43 with an X300 card. I know this cause I tried it :-)

Keep in mind...XGL is still developmental and can be buggy. It was fun for a little bit...but its not quite as zippy as my regular Dapper-Gnome desktop. Firefox would crash often.

Someone on UbuntuForums wrote an install script for this. A quick search would merit results.

HTH,
Brian.
