Off topic but, You're living in the Adirondack Mountains, NY? That's one of my favorite places in the entire country. Grandparents used to have a log cabin in Weavertown, NY....we'd always go camping and hiking and have a blast up there. Any IT jobs up there?
With that being said, what exactly are you trying to do with the stock 2.6 kernel? Which distro? I've never really had a need to build a new kernel except on a 600e, which was painfully slow until I did so.

No IT jobs within the park, but there are jobs in
http://www.techvalley.org/ This site would be a good place as any to start. I have bicycled through Weavertown couple years back; its pretty. This is off topic but did you ever make it to Tahawus?
http://www.ghosttowns.com/states/ny/tah ... ondak.html It is within driving distance from Weavertown...
I was thinking of installing Linux on this X32. However, the limited ThinkPad Dock support forced me to shelf the project.
Thanks for your reply.

Beaker,
No, I haven't made it to Tahawus. What an interesting website though, maybe someday I will head up there. I wish I could find this one website I saw a while ago, which detailed pictures and blogging of a fellow that actually rode through the remnants of the city surrounding the Chernobyl Nuclear Power plant. Talk about a ghost town.
Thanks also for the other link. I graduate in December and will be on the job search come this summer.
Back on topic though, what Dock Support features were you looking for that you failed to find within the stock kernels? Which distro?
