A20M + docking station enet = problems

I have 3 A20M, two with enet the other without. I got a docking station, the one that can take a PCI card. I put in a combo PCI that has firewire, usb2 and 1gb ethernet. Works fine under windows, seems to work fine under RedHat version 9 linux: I can browse web, mount externals, seems ok. For some reason, FTP is failing. With A20M as source a "get" times out with socket error. Small file 100bytes works O.K. large 3mb fails with socket error. These are binary transfers. With A20M as destination ie: from windows machine I use ftp and do a "put" the same problems occurs - timeout on large file. I cannot get or put large files from either workstation.
OK, I pulled it out of the docking station and connected ethernet cable direct to the A20M built in port. It worked fine, tooks seconds to transfer 3mb size file. Not a problem with builting enet.
Looks like RH9 (2.4.20-8) cannot handle the 1gb chip. Probably need a new kernel??? and I am not into building kernels. Is there some setting or configuration that can make that 1gb compatible with this old kernel?
I will try downloading the latest kernel at kernel.org, maybe that will fix the problem: 2.4.32 and it seems i will have to build it???
