Some help for a newbie (ubuntu)...power management

#1 Post by tincbtrar » Tue Apr 11, 2006 11:30 am

Hi everyone!

Im looking for some help developing my ubuntu system. Im realtively new to linux....but I would like to learn how to...

-Undervolt my system.
-Fan control....like in windows.
-Hard drive control - power management.
-Any power management utilities would help...i tried tinkering with ibm_acpi but it keeps saying "Permission denied"

Basically I use my laptop all the time these days...and im always on the go. I have tried reading some of the topics at thinkWiki but my newbness (is this a word) makes it confusing to apply. Here are my specs

Thinkpad T43 1.86 GHZ
Ubuntu Dapper Flight 6 Kernel 2.6.15.20-686
Xgl/Compiz/Gnome

Many thanks in advance,
Brian

Maybe you should familiarise yourself with linux first then so that the thinkwiki docs make sense to you [because they're actually pretty good].

Btw, regarding ibm_acpi, if you are getting "Permission denied" you might want to try:
sudo su
that will put you in a root shell, and then try ibm_acpi again. Beware root = admin though so you should take care on what commands you issue so as to not screw up system.

Yes...you are right. Im still trying to learn the basics of Linux. I will try to get things running.
