i searched and searched, but am still at a loss of what to do. There is no XP on the harddrive, just suse. Everything works out of the box except the wireless. I'm pretty sure all i need to do is "configure" the wireless controller...or something like that....but i have no idea what that entails. Will i need to apply the ndiswrapper? any and all assistance is appreciated.

which wireless adapter do you have?

Go over to thinkwiki.org and find out. Then click on the wireless card to find out the drivers for it. If you might have a Cisco or Broadcom wifi card which would require you to use Ndiswrapper, where as if you have the Atheros or intel chips your fine.

I am using suse 10.1 on my t43p and wireless works very well.

If you have a atheros card, just add the packman repository to yast and install the madwifi-kernel-default package.

Networkmanager will handle every configuration. So you don't need to touch anything.

And be sure to update your system via online update of yast. Lots of packages have been repeared since the release of suse, and it's available via yast update.

i looked up what i had on the ibm website (what my computer was shipped with) and it said:

CALEXICO2 802.11a/b/g MINI-PCI Card FRU

i think that translates to IBM 11a/b/g Wireless LAN Mini PCI Adapter II on the thinkwiki site. and according to that is has an Atheros chipset.

...so, i need to add the packman repository to yast
how?

and install the madwifi-kernel-default package
how?

then update system via online update of yast
how?

I apologize for all the questions, hopefully I'll be able to help some other people out with this in the not-too-distance future. Thanks again!

i looked again, and i think its actually an intel chip...not atheros

no matter what you want to do, you have to install the latest patches to have a stable system. Suse's package manager was broken when it's released and with patches they have fixed a little bit.

So for online update:

1-open Yast , for gnome Desktop -> Yast , for kde it must be in system->yast

2- in System menu, click on online update

3- you dont have to modify anything so do next (or ok )

4- after finished, redo an online update

5- That's it, reboot

and if you can add additional package repositories by clicking on "installation source' in system menu of yast. And adding the corresponding repository adress. You can find the adresses in www.opensuse.org (search for yast, and u'll see)
