ubuntu on T60 - which graphics card to get?

#1 Post by ischg » Sat Aug 05, 2006 1:58 pm

I pretty much decided that my next notebook will be a T60 and the first action will be to make it dual-boot with ubuntu, which I will use for about 95% of the time

My gut feeling tells me that I should get the dedicated ATI card (especially since they don't even offer the intel GMA for the 15" flexviews), but I still don't know whether the 64MB of the x1300 will suffice or I should spend the extra money to get 128 MB with the x1400 to be on the safe side.

I haven't played with compiz/xgl yet, but it looks like it's the future of the linux desktop. I know that it runs on a lot of hardware, but I also heared that it doesn't necessarily mean that it runs smoothly. Is there yet a consensus about what amount of video ram should work well for the foreseeable future?

Thanks!

If you can afford it get the 128mb x1400.

XGL doesnt require much to run - just maybe 512MB of system ram. I have successfully run xgl with a geforce 2 32mb card.

Its kinda unfortunate that thinkpads dont come with geforce cards - even low end ones cuz for now ati drivers are crap compared to nvidias drivers.

However seeing that amd bought ati, we might see that trend change.

Thanks man, I just ordered a T60 with the x1400. I'm looking forward to getting this baby to run on linux ... and I hope that the ATI support keeps getting better.
