x60s modem

Has anyone had any luck getting the modem to work on an X60s (or any other recent thinkpad - I expect they all use the same chip)?
The HSF drivers don't work, and lspci and /proc/asound/pcm don't mention anything about a modem... I'm open to any suggestions anyone might have!

Is there any news on this front? Or any reason that i should give up hope of ever having a functional modem?

I have a T43. Xandros 4 hardware detection find and correctly identifies the modem. The connection record is created for a dial connection, but the connection fails. The modem function is apparently supported by an Intel 82891FB/FBM/FR/FW/FRW (ICH6 Family) AC'97 Modem Controller. In Xandros Control | Hardware Detection, the modem icon has a small red astrisk that I thought might be meaningful. But then I checked this screen on my X24 and it also has an astrisk, but the modem works.
It's hard to imagine that such basic hardware support is missing in current distributions of Linux for such a large class of machines.

Here: although official support is for t60p, it can apply to other systems:

John, thanks for the link.
I downloaded this package and tried to install it on a T43 on which I had installed openSuSE 10.1 The rpm found no prebuilt modules for SuSE-10.1 linux-2.6.16.13-4-default i686. It wanted the kernel source, warned about a missing autoconf.h file, gave instructions for reconfiguing the kernel source, once it had access to that and a C compiler.
I'm just leaving tracks for others who may be interested in this information to judge if this is something they feel comfortable in trying. I don't.
Incidently, in 08-06, Nightstorm reported trying the ThinkVantage tools, which I assume included this package, and said that it did not configure his modem correctly; while this was in a thread originally about T60s, he didn't specifically say that this is what he tried this on.
