Unfortunately, Lenovo's charging Linux users a huge premium to get SLED preinstalled. I called to make sure and the story is right here http://linosx.nyvisitek.com/2006/08/15/ ... for-linux/

Well, that does suck about them charging so much.

BUT, drivers and compatibility will no longer be an issue!!!! That, to me, is the more important thing than being able to get it preloaded for a premium.

So now, when someone asks a question like "Will the T60 run Linux?", the answer will be a resounding "Yes, they preload it on them; everything can, and will, work."

Personally, I'd like an option to purchase it without any O/S at all, just like the old days.

I would love an option to purchase with no OS either. However, if they decide to do that, they'll probably charge another huge premium.

I understand that there's a cost to developing the software and drivers but that cost also exists for the Windows world. Only difference is that they'll sell many many more Windows machines and can recoup the cost in smaller increments across many many machines.

Novell is also probably charging much more for the license to install SLED than Microsoft charges for Windows.

Now I'll just have to buy a [censored] Windows T60p and install Linux on my own again. I'd love to hear about people using the Lenovo software on other distros.

I'm very positive about the new linux offering...
but the 810 USD extra,
and that the the hw driver support doesnt seem to be
feature complete puts me off again.

In the German heise forum I've read that Active Protection
and FingerPrint Reader is supposedly not supported under SLED10.

Unfortunately, I can't read German but this is the first I've heard of Active Protection and the FingerPrint Reader not being supported. Emperor Linux sells IBM/Lenovo ThinkPads with FingerPrint Reader support. What the hell are Novell and Lenovo thinking/doing??
