NON-linux guy and a SLED10 Install on a X60

#1 Post by pusherman » Thu Sep 07, 2006 1:34 pm

Well, Im a VERY happy dude. I got SLED 10 running in about 2 hours from 1st install reboot to surfing the net.

Very easy destro to install. Only things that dont work are hot docking/undocking (dont use the dock much)and the fingerprint reader(dont care). The only problem I have is with SLED is I got spoiled with Open Suse and the kitchen-sink style of software instaltion. Seems like there are fewer shinny bits installed on SLED by default.

And MAN is this puppy fast! Building my main project at work in ANT is a 15 min task on a windoz lappy running 2gigs and 3.06Ghz P4. The X60 will do it in 6 flat!

This is easy enuff any one that can install windows can install SLED10.

im cheap and am using the free suse 10.1, what would you say the differences are between this, and SLED 10, if you have had the oppertunity to try both? is it worth paying and making a switch?

Let me start by saying again Im NOT a linux guy. I just happen to work with a load of card carrying linux nuts.

I have Open Suse 10.1 on my other lappy(duel booting winders). When I set that one up it was a bit more diffcult to get the wireless running, 3d desktop, and a few other little things. The 3d card setup in OS10.1 was like doing chinease algerba while shooting tequila... "Down load the ATI drivers, install them, download some strangely names .so from a russia site, copy it to some folder to correct a bug in the latest drivers with my spasific card..." I could go on but its not all that intersting.

On the setup of sled it was brainless point and click....droped in the disk and away you go. My idea of a great install is the ijw scale.
If It Just Works then its good like gold and EVERY thing in SLED ... JUST WORKED. Video card, wireless, 3d desktop, pre-install disk setup and boot manager JUST WORKED...

Only beef I have with SLED is that when I went to install VSFTPD and JAVA5 and some other stuff the SLED online sources didnt have them. I added a few other sites(OS10.1) to YAST and they craped out. I guess SLED and 10.1 package repos
dont play nice together.

Oh yea one last thing and this is just a [censored] thing , not all that important realy but...

I like the amaroK player in KDE but on SLED it clams the xine-engine cant play MP3s so I was forced to use the less polished Helix Banshee that ships with Gnome. And I know you linux guys will have a fix for this, and I tried to install some stuff off the net, the xmms-lib-mad-1.2.10-79.pm.1.i586.rpm but that didnt fix it...

So if I have to re-install Im going with OS10.1. Its worth the pain to get the DEEP package libs off the net.
