Ubuntu Question

I have Ubuntu 6.06 running on my IBM Desktop and Ubuntu 5.05 running on my T41. The V 6 machine is a whole gigabyte or more larger than the V 5 machine and I don't wish to give up the real estate on the Laptop.

Now I just spent the better part of today upgrading to VMware 5.53, reinstalling Tools on each of 10 machines, updating all patches, and shrinking all the machines (grumble, grumble, grumble).

During the process, I see Ubuntu 6.10 is now out (Edgy). Has anyone run this? Is it worth the effort? I have to say I am still partial to 5.05.

Yes, I recently put Kubuntu Edgy it on my ThinkPad and love it. The power management is better than previous versions and hibernate and standby finally work correctly. Here's a quick comparison between Dapper and Edgy (don't quote me on the numbers; they aren't intended to be precise):

A fresh install is recommended. The Ubuntu/Kubuntu forums are littered with sad stories of upgrades gone amok. Upgrading worked OK for me but it took a while duking it out at the command line to get some of the more stubborn packages to upgrade properly.

Thanks. I tried a 5 -> 6 upgrade, and indeed it was a pain in the butt. I deleted the machine and did a 6 fresh install. When I get a moment, I will download the new ISO file and try a fresh install of 6.10. ... JD Hurst

JD, my "Edgy Eft woes" thread I reported all sorts of problems with upgrading to 6.10 via command line. Doing a fresh install with an .iso has presented no problems. (just a bunch of Firefox 2.0 crashes) Good luck with the upgraded distro!

6.10 is not as stable as 6.06, so if there's nothing you need from 6.10 (less fiddly AVR support, better support for XGL/AIGXL Beryl/Compiz window managers) then I'd say stick with 6.06.

Firefox 2.0 and such are easily available (not to mention swiftfox ) for both 6.10 and 6.06, even if they're not in the repos for 6.06.

Think I'm talking in circles, but I'll try to sum it up really quick. 6.06 is very stable, 6.10 adds a few features, but introduces quite a few bugs and 'issues'. Take a look and see if any of the issues will affect you before you decide to upgrade.

I've been using 6.06 for awhile now on my T23. I've had no problems with it, it saw all my hardware, including WIFI. And it goes into and out of standby each and everytime, a first for me with ANY Linux distros.
