Different debian "problems"

I'm going to ask all my current and future questions here

1) I tried getting APS to work, but no luck till now.
I used the packages available here
I did the:
- kernel-patch-tpsmapi
- kernel-patch-queuefreeze

Now I wanted to do hdapsd, which gives me this:

Code: Select all

Esp:/home/karel/Desktop# dpkg -i hdapsd_0.3-1_i386.deb
(Reading database ... 108953 files and directories currently installed.)
Preparing to replace hdapsd 0.3-1 (using hdapsd_0.3-1_i386.deb) ...
Stopping hdaps daemon: invoke-rc.d: initscript hdapsd, action "stop" failed.
Unpacking replacement hdapsd ...
Setting up hdapsd (0.3-1) ...
No protect entry for hda. Make sure your kernel is patched with the blk_freeze patch
If you use kernel-package, you can apt-get install kernel-patch-queuefreeze.
invoke-rc.d: initscript hdapsd, action "start" failed.
(I tried install several times and the kernel-patch-queuefreeze IS installed and the latest version)

I installed khdapsmon and when I start it I get:

Code: Select all

Session management error: Authentication Rejected, reason : None of the authentication protocols specified are supported and host-based authentication failed
Link points to "/tmp/ksocket-root"
Link points to "/tmp/kde-root"
Session management error: Authentication Rejected, reason : None of the authentication protocols specified are supported and host-based authentication failed
kbuildsycoca running...
Reusing existing ksycoca

kbuildsycoca: WARNING: '/usr/share/applications/totem.desktop' specifies undefined mimetype/servicetype 'application/x-extension-mp4'
kbuildsycoca: WARNING: '/usr/share/applications/totem.desktop' specifies undefined mimetype/servicetype 'application/x-extension-m4a'
...... and so on ......
2) How do I get the wireless to connect on startup? When booting I see networking being set, some error "eth2 cannot be found" (eth2 is my wireless), and another message from not able to connect I believe. Then a little later it finds the wireless, but when finally the system is started wireless is not connected.

3) I don't often see it, but mostly when moving fast over different windows and in some control panels (of xfce) I see a horizontal line beneath the mouse. I have applied the "patch" given at thinkwiki (which makes the line only appear on some points). This is not bothering me TO much, but would be nice if fixed.

4) The fan is running all the time. Not at a high level or so, but it is a little bit anoying sometimes (I just needed to study for some exams and I needed the thinkpad to be turned on...)
I know on windows the fan didn't run at all (except after a few hours it ran for a minute or 2).

5) I recently edited a .doc file which I started at windows and on OOo the fonts are bigger (because of that, a just-fitting-into-a-table-cell word came on 2 lines). The font used on windows was times new roman 12px and the same font was displayed in the dropdown in OOo.
On the other hand, forum.thinkpads.com has a really small font size (compared to on windows), surely compared to other sites.

Getting APS to work is not a trivial thing. It involves rebuilding the kernel (since there is no agreement on a standard way to implement queue-freeze it's not included in standard kernels), which is not something you want to do unless you know what you're doing.

There are scripts to help with this, but they utilize undocumented hardware features, and can therefore, potentially, turn your thinkpad into a $1500 frying pan. Remember to bring eggs.

If you're not deterred, search thinkwiki.org for fan control.

Try downloading the microsoft font pack. It's in the repositories for Ubuntu, so I'm guessing they're there for Debian as well. I can't remember the exact package, but it should be easy enough to find.

The package was released as freeware from Microsoft during the first browser wars. After they won, MS removed the link, but the licence agreement states that it can be distributed. So someone else took over. I think it's a project over at sourceforge somewhere.

Hope that helps.
