Suse Wireless Issue

Hello,

I'm pretty new to Linux and I'm having difficulty getting Suse 10.1 to recognize my internal wireless card.

I've recently done a fresh install using the smp kernel, and out of the box it found my Lenovo Gig Ethernet Controller. Now I also have the Thinkpad a/b/g/n wireless card (Atheros), but that was not found.

I've downloaded the latest Madwifi package for the smp kernel, and now I'm not sure if Linux is designed to just see the card at startup (similar to windows plug-n-play) or if it would need to be configured manually?

This wireless card is new, and maybe the Madwifi package isn't designed for it yet, I'm not sure. The only info I can find on the card itself is by looking at the MS Windows driver, and it lists it as "ar5416".

Does anyone have any info or pointers on how I can get this wireless card working under Suse? I've also read somewhere that it may be possible to setup wireless cards using the ndiswrapper? Again, any insight would be appreciated.

Thanks a lot for pointing me in that direction. I am definitely getting closer.

I followed the online tutorial but now found a line in the system log saying it can't start ndiswrapper with my driver because its not a 64bit driver. (Yeah, I forgot about that. )

Any chance anyone has any info on Atheros 64bit drivers/support? Or are these just "expected sometime in the near future..."

Hi there ,

Well I have some good news for you and some bad news too hehe.

To start of I have ThinkPad T60 1953-D7U, I got pretty sick of the Intel 3945ABG card and how crappy it runs under Linux and I went ahead and purchased a Thinkpad a/b/g card.

Let me tell you that this is so far the best card I have tested under Linux, it's setup once and it keeps working, I am able to authenticate with WEP, WPA & WPA2 with ease.

Also I think you would be glad to know that I have written an extensive guide that describes what needs to be done for that card to work properly under Linux.

Now the bad news, well the guide that I have written is for Fedora Core 6 on FedoraForum.org, but I think there should be no problems getting it to work on Suse as most of the package names are exactly the same and you should be able to use SUSE's package manager to get them, or grab them from places such as Pbone, and the tarblalls should work on all Linux versions.

SLED/SUSE works on my X60s, including wireless (just not the Verizon WWAN).

You should be able to install the IBM/Lenovo Linux utilities including wireless which is meant for SLED under KDE.
