What is PengAlert?
PengAlert is one of the coolest Linux hardware devices you will find. The handsome penguin plugs into your USB port and sits aiting for you or your script files to issue commands to it and have it respond to those commands.

PengAlert contains 10 LEDs, 3 Seven Segment LED displays, a Piezo Buzzer and a DB9 connector with 4 external ports. Using the simple provided application of USEND in conjunction with BASH, Perl, C/C++, etc. you can control each of the devices to provide displays of conditions.
For example, if you want to report the number e-mail messages waiting for you, have the 3 Seven Segment LED displays show it via a BASH script file. If you are nearly out of disk space, have one of the red LEDs blink at a rate of 4 per second to display the roblem.
You could display your CPU temperature. Or just for fun, you could randomly blink the LEDs on PengAlert. Control isn't just limited to the devices on PengAlert. There are 4 ports available for external control. Using a transistor and/or relay, you can control high voltage, high current devices such as motors, household lights, Christmas lights, etc.
Quick Example
To light up LED #1 from BASH, you would issue the following command:
usend -c "LED1 ON"
To make it blink 2 times per second, you would issue the following:
usend -c "LED1 BLINK 2HZ"
To make the Piezo buzz at 3.9kHz, you would issue the following:
usend -c "PIEZO ON 3"
It is that simple.
PengAlert is a versatile and fun device to sit on top of your desk or on top of your computer smiling away at you reporting different conditions to you.
