Suspend/Resume Question

Hello all, this is my first post and I apologize if this topic is covered. I have an IBM T21 which I bought new a little over 3 years ago, after a major Windows crash I decided to make the full move to Linux only (I've been dual booting for quite a while). I'm running Fedora Core 2 and I plan to recompile my kernel tomorrow (2.6.8-1.521); I was wondering if I need to do set up anything to allow Suspend/Resume to work? I'm currently using the stock kernel from Yum, and APM doesn't look to be supported in my kernel. ACPI is setup, by Hibernate doesn't work. I've read various sources which suggest I need to create an empty partition for Hibernate to work, is this the case for Suspend/Resume as well (I don't realy care for Hibernate). If I do need a partition, what size is optimal. Also is there any other suggestions on things I should add when I recompile the kernel?
Thanks,
Nick
