Hi everyone

Ok, I am, for the first time, experimenting with LINUX.
I downloaded: KNOPPIX STD, AUDITOR and Back|Track 2.0 for, I guess, the obvious reasons...

After testing a little bit I did notice that Auditor does recognize my internal Atheros a/b/g card and does recognize my 2 PCMCIA Netgear WG511t's. That looks promising.

Now for the question:

Can I use i.e.:
internal card -> internet connection (regular)
1 PCMCIA card -> monitor mode
1 PCMCIA card -> injection mode

at the same time?

The LINUX versions I use are all running from CD.

[censored], you're really climbing a steep hill.

If you are really serious about _using_ Linux, I would recomend you trying ubuntu or something, first.

So you can practise commandline usage and just general tinkering.

But to _start_ with backtrack and packet injection, now that's a challenge.

Well, back to the subject. To answer your question, yes, you can use all of the NIC's at the same time.

The Atheros chipsets even supports packet-injection while in monitor mode. So you can use only one NIC for both monitor and injection if you like.

The WG511t's are also atheros based I think.

anyways, to use the internal nic for connectivity do this:


become root. (I'm assuming ath0 is your primary, internal nic)

#iwconfig ath0 essid "your-accesspoint" key "yourwepkey-ifyouhaveone"

#dhclient ath0

or

#ifconfig ath0 up 192.168.0.33 (or whatever you wish)
#route add default gw 192.168.0.1 (or whatever your routers ip is)

#nano /etc/resolv.conf

add:

nameserver <dns-server-ip>

close and save.

try to ping.

#ping ftp.sunet.se

wash.rinse.repeat.

and about aireplay, I don't really remember the syntax, but it's well documented on their site.

But be careful, wardriving/sniffing/using unprotected APs is one thing (and is legal/semi-legal), actively braking into and cracking a wepkey or WPA key is however a serious crime

I got the internal Atheros working. sniffing AND injecting (of course on my own wifi router).

The netgears are indeed Atheros (that is why I bought them)

Also, I already hacked my own wep-key. very very easy, I have to work on that to make it more secure (hence the testing).

As for the steep climb: I guess so, but since I am (even pre-) DOS-generation (started with a Acorn Electron, remember that?) I am still kind of used to command lines and figuring out the options etc. etc. Not easy though beginning to part-time learn a new OS.

Next projects:
-learning more LINUX
-cracking my wifi without a client attached
-securing my wifi router much much better

As for you final comment: Yes, I do sometimes use unprotected wifi, since I am travelling so very much (sometimes no other option).
As for cracking someone else's wifi, not really my game, there usually is some paid-as-you-go network in the air BUT it is good to know all this to secure my own wifi gear.

I guess you will be trying to de-auth/brute-force wpa now huh?

And btw, you have to try running kismet with your 3 nics, it's excellent. And probably a prequisite if you're gonna look for 11a APs since there's so many channels.

And another thing... About you cracking wep on an AP with no wireless client....

Some cheap APs "leak" arp--requests from lan to wlan, so if you discover a wired client on that ap, you can use that to generate arp-requests and wep-encrypted traffic.
