I'm running edgy with wpa2 encryption, so I guess the answer is 'yes'.

WPA

Networkmanager works well with the most common wireless network types. If you have a normal WPA setup it will work fine. If you have a complicated two-phase authentification with WPA Enterprise then it might not support that yet. Look into /var/log/messages and see which kind of error you get.

Out of the box edgy is WEP only. I can never seem to get network manager working! There is a new app called Connection Manager, I believe that is what its called, Ill try that. Last I heard it was in beta.

I've had lots of problems with network-manager-gnome, it took a long time for me to get it to work.

I had to compile drivers, network manager, wpa_supplicant etc etc....

But by a coincidence, I tried Automatix2 and selected Networkmanager.

And after a reboot, voila! It worked with WPA!...

And good times were held by all. :)

WAP worked out-of-box for me on both Dapper and Edgy.

WPASupplicant is a brilliant piece of software for running WPA (once you get it set up properly). It's what Networkmanager uses as a back-end, afaik.

Either way, it involves a bit of config-file diving, but once it's set up it behaves exactly as you want it to.

I think the key here is 'once it's set up'.

I remember trying to get Fedora Core 5 & 6 setup to work with my DrayTek 2600G router (WPA Encryption). Such a hassle.

Fedora didn't turn on NetworkManager by default, big mistake. My T41p has an Atheros chip so I needed to download madwifi, configure it. wpa_supplicant wasn't clearly shown to be installed in Fedora Core 5, it is more obvious now. So trying to link them all together, still wouldn't accept my wireless.

The madwifi drivers aren't very good performance wise. Not their fault.

I was able to access wpa by following this guide which works for ubuntu 6.10

http://www.debianadmin.com/enable-wpa-w ... linux.html

Now i dont know if the krader and other app for wireless are needed or not.

Additionally from wut ive been reading and experiancing, wifi signal is very week on 6.10.

Hope it helps

Well one could always increase the transmit power on the wifi card.

Done that on my atheros using the "txpower" option of "iwconfig" - example:

Code: Select all

# iwconfig athX txpower nn
nn - test power levels up to 50dB. Start at a mid-range level of 18 or so...
(all in the man pages folks!)

Cheers!

Oh wow, as if tinkering with ubuntu isnt enough. But am up for it, so your saying that i can increase the amount of sensetivity of my wifi card. hmm really like this idea, never looked into the matter before.
In that case why wouldnt I just put it to the maximum level?
Will this effect anything, in terms of lifespan of the wifi card etc.

so i just run terminal and put in the code u just mentioned an i should have a panel or something?

I have found that installing knetworkmanager got rid of all my network worries, whether it is open, wep, wpa or wpa2! You click on it, input the key and off you go...

And yes, you can install it on gnome, too.
