Touchpad: WinXP - SUSE 10.2 interaction

I installed SUSE 10.2 on an external USB drive to use on my R51 and played with it for a while yesterday.
When I returned to XP, I found that the touchpad config had been changed. In particular, the cursor speed had been slowed down (looked to be mid-scale), but most annoying, tapping had been re-enabled.
This suggests that the touchpad parameters are stored in the the R51's guts somewhere, and not just in files read by the respective OSes.
Am I right in my assumption, or is there some way to keep the settings from interfering with one another?
