Trying to install Ubuntu on a T22

I'm trying to install Ubuntu on a T22 (currently running XP) and I can't get it to boot from the CD.

The CD does start to load Ubuntu, but never makes it to actually show the desktop. I get the CD menu, the logo with the progress bar, lots of toing-and-froing from the CD drive, the odd message or two, mostly too fast to read, and then the system hangs.

One message I did manage to read was something about detecting an IBM laptop and not being able to load a module in case the EEPROM was corrupted.

I have tried Ubuntu 6.10 and 6.06, even tried reburning the downloaded ISOs again in case of errors.

Thanks for any help

Looks like you should select the use of a safe graphics mode.

Thanks Michael

I did try the safe graphics mode and it didn't make any difference, but from reading the article you linked to, it looks like I may have to try it another 10 times or so to be sure... sigh

Finally got it to load on attempt 7 :D

And yeah, I reckon it was safe graphics mode that did the trick

Now I've just got to find my way round a completely new OS :?

i have the same situation

Another option would be to use the alternate installer CD (the one you would use to do a server install). This uses the text-based Debian installer.

Let it do the regular desktop install.

Assuming no other problems, you would then do a safe boot (boots to root shell) and manually edit /etc/X11/xorg.conf to add the couple of lines required for Savage configuration.

This is how I installed Ubuntu on my T22.
