T60 Modem in Linux

#1 Post by Hamid » Sat Mar 03, 2007 3:29 pm

Hi,
I was trying to configure the modem in Linux on a CentOS (Redhat clone) and also Gentoo but to no success. (although I am not that good in linux)

I have also tried searching on the Internet but apparently, no one cares about the modem setup in the HowTos. :)
I was wondering if anyone has been able to setup the modem in distributions other than Novel/OpenSUSE?

Thanks,
Hamid

PS: With the provided package by lenovo for the modem, I get the "modem busy" error in kppp.

It is probably another winmodem, if you search for ltmodem or linmodem on the net you may get some help. I tied the these drivers in the past and ended up with a very unstable system. So I carry a 56K PCMCIA modem with that uses standard com system for when needed and is rock solid.
Just my experience

Well, As far as I have read on fiirent forums and mailing lists, the linmodems don't work on the T60 models. The only mentioned solution is linuxant drivers which I am unable to use them.

BTW, what PCMCIA modem are you using? Does it work without (or at least liittle) trouble in Linux?
Thanks,
Hamid

I have tried them, but couldn't get the modem functional. The provided driver Is an RPM dor SUSE (I am not sure, correct me if I am wrong)

My PCMCIA is an old Megahertz XJ1560, looks just like a com port works perfect! This is the most reliable way the good old hardware modem. With the linuxant I ended up with kernel panics on my t42 so I never even tried again.

Try Ubuntu.
