Extended Desktop to a second monitor

Is there a way to get the "Extend my Windows desktop onto this monitor" feature in Linux.
I have a IBM T40p running SuSE 9.1 Pro.
ATI Mobility Fire GL 9000
I would be nice if there was a simple way to do this without modifying the XFree86 config file. I have tried using Sax2 to set this up, but no luck. I saw a thread somewhere to setup 2 graphics cards in Sax and assign the laptop's LCD to one and the external monitor to the other, but as I said no luck so far.
Thanks for the help.

Depending on the xserver you are using and the feature you want you don't have to mess around in your XFree.config.
I am using X.org with the radeon driver and it clones the desktop by default.
If you want a extension of your screen to the right, left, etc. read man radeon (but then you have to edit the XFree.config).
BTW I have a T40p too but I am using gentoo

Well, it does not really matters what desktop manager you are using (for you it is kde) but since xfree86-4.3 has changed it's license, poeple tend to use x.org. But AFAIK Suse delivers still xfree86.
If you have a little time and patience (who has it ?

) you can search the linux-thinkpad mailing list
http://mailman.linux-thinkpad.org/mailm ... x-thinkpad for xinerama (that's the name of the feature you are looking for under linux) or you send me your XFree.conf so I could have a look at what you are using.

Thank you for your help. I will spend some time looking around for this feature. I don't want to waste your time if I don't have to. If I do get stuck I will post my XConfig file.
Thanks again.
