Can't get WiFi working on Fedora 7 (6.9)

#1 Post by dxben » Sat Apr 07, 2007 1:07 pm

I followed the instructions on ThinkWiki of the guy who put Fedora 7 on his T60.

F7 didn't even see the firmware driver, I had to yum it. Then I can't activate the wireless device in the network manager, it says:

Error for wireless request "Set Encode" (8B2A) :
SET failed on device wmaster0 ; Operation not supported.
Determining IP information for wmaster0...

Some wireless cards give that error then work just fine.

The problem is that it just fails to "determine IP" or something like that and the wireless device remains in an inactive state.

I'm wondering how the guy on ThinkWiki pulled it off with the same hardware.

I also get this message after running /sbin/iwlist wlan0 scanning

Warning: Driver for device wlan0 has been compiled with version 22
of Wireless Extension, while this program supports up to version 20.
Some things may be broken...

wlan0 No scan results

First, I suggest you get support for a test version of an OS from the developers and users of that distribution.

Does it work with FC6?

Which wireless card do you have?

What exactly did you do to try to get it to work?

Just a note:

with FC6 I could not get it to identify my Intel 2200BG card. It would have required some hackery, of which I had no intention of doing. That card is so bog-standard that it should have been supported out of the box.

When did FC7 come out?

to the OP:

Is your wifi nic even detected by the system? it should show up with something like this

lspci 2200 <- where I have a 2200 card, you would input your card model # there.

Which WiFi card is in your T60? Mine has the Intel 3945 ABG card, and I got it to work in FC6. They also have an Atheros card.

It sounds like you don't have the correct driver installed.

(And F7 isn't out yet. It's in testing, which is why I suggested getting support from there.)

Really? I have multiple Lenovo X41s and a couple of other random laptops with the Intel 2200BG and 2915BG (all the same driver) running just fine under FC6. The only thing I had to do was download the firmware for the cards.

What problems did you have?

FC7 is not released yet, you must be using Test 4 or earlier. Perhaps moving over to the stable FC6 would be wise.

Not identified.

lspci showed that it would see the card, but I could not enable it. Gave up and reloaded SuSE which has always been perfect for me. Works right out of the DVD.
