LaCie USB Mobile Hard Drive on Linux

Hi

I consider to buy LaCie USB Mobile Hard Drive (60GB), however, I can not find
too much info how is this device compatible with different Linux versions. I have
ibm T42 2379-DXU and would like to install RedHat or Mandrake Linux in the future.
Other choice of the hard drive would be Pocketec Data Store, but it seems to me more expensive with no clear benefit. Any experience?

If you use is as a USB device it will run out of the box. For firewire you will need to rescan the scsi bus.

LaCie is usually a mac shop so they partition their disks in mac format. You may need to repartition your drive.

I am using a 320 GB firewire (USB2 also supported, but who wants to use that) LaCie drive for my A30p and it works like a charm after scsi bus rescan once I plug it in. I would not really call it portable (but luggable yes.)

Hey, I don't mean to say anything is wrong with the Lacie drives, but I think you can get a much better deal on an external (at least for 60-80gig).

Right now, CompUSA is running a deal on their self-branded external USB2.0 7200rpm 80GB drives for $49 after a $50 mail-in rebate. I have been looking for a pre-assembled (didn't care to risk the do-it-yourself route with enclosures) external HD for linux and backup purposes, and so far this model has done very well for me. Also, I believe the enclosure is pretty generic, so you can upgrade down the line to a larger HD as they become cheaper.

It should work with Mandrake, as you can buy one with
Mandrake Linux pre-installed. Rather cool.
