T21 Fan Speed not shown in OpenSuSE 10.2

laptop:/home/harryc # modprobe ibm_acpi experimental=1
laptop:/home/harryc # cat /proc/acpi/ibm/fan
status: enabled
speed: 0
commands: enable, disable
The result above even though the fan is on. Any ideas?
laptop:/home/harryc # lsmod | grep ibm
ibm_acpi 33024 184
laptop:/home/harryc # uname -a
Linux laptop 2.6.18.8-0.1-default #1 SMP Fri Mar 2 13:51:59 UTC 2007 i686 i686 i386 GNU/Linux
laptop:/home/harryc # cat /proc/acpi/ibm/fan
status: enabled
speed: 0
commands: enable, disable
The result above even though the fan is on. Any ideas?
