Fedora Core 7 on VMWare (now Fedora 7)

I was wondering if the installation kernel bug (type "linux i686" (or maybe just 686) at the prompt) has been fixed in this new release?

Somehow I can't get it to install in VMWare: it couldn't find my "virtual" hard drive???

I have VMware 5.5.4 running and it makes no mention of Fedora Core for a guest operating system. Red Hat and Red Hat Enterprise (most versions) are supported. Check the documentation for VMware 6 to see if Fedora is supported there. A quick google says that VMware does not officially support a Fedora guest (but that relates to VMware 5.5.4 or earlier). ... I have the same VMWare version and was using Fedora Core 6 perfectly fine. I chose "Other Linux 2.6.x kernel" in VMWare. Removed/Deleted FC6 and install the new FC7 and had the problems as mentioned in the original post.

With regards to the OP the fix was: linux 686

it could actually be either "linux i686" or "linux 686" in FC6.

Anyone got FC7 up running yet?

I have installed unsupported Linux guests by choosing other Linux, but I have learned (by trying) that just because Unsupported Guest V1 installs, that doesn't mean Unsupported Guest V2 installs. VMware is funny that way, mostly because it has to provide a specific machine environment with drivers. So I just take my chances with stuff like this. Best of luck to you. ... JDH

Not really understand what u're saying, however it does not answer my question, thus please keep the thread going.

I had only 1 VMWare OS: FC6. I did delete FC6 prior to create a fresh virtual machine to install FC7.

What I am trying to say is that just because FC6 (not supported) installed and worked, it does not mean that FC7 (also not supported) will work. I have tried the same thing with Gentoo (not supported) and had back luck. Any guest machine that is supported in the documentation will work fine with the newest version of VMware.

Also to your last question, if you delete the folder containing the machine, it will leave no trace to VMware, so deleting FC6 was not of any consequence in trying to install FC7

Now I got what u meant. I believe FC7 also uses 2.6.x Linux Kernel, thus it would be strange if it doesn't work like FC6 did. That's why my next question was if anyone got FC7 to work + to work in VMWare?

Windows Vista Business (32 bits)
VMWare Workstations 6.0
Fedora 7 for x86_64 (64 bits)

I had multiple problem trying to install Fedora 7 in 64 bits, always complainning about CPU being 64 bits, but VT not enable.

Dont try to create the VM with "Other Linux 2.6.x kernel 64 bits" it wont work...

Here is my recipe for a successfull fedora 7 in 64 bits while running my 32 bits version of vista business edition

1) Enabled VT in bios
2) Created the VM using "Other Linux 64 bit"
3) Use your DVD (.iso) file for boot
4) Proceed with install

If you have an issue with 64 bits the kernel wont even decompress...

I haven't actually tried to install Fedora 7 as VMware guest, but I can guess the reason for your "virtual hard drive not found" problem. F7 changed to the new libata driver system, so the way it searches for hard drives is now different. Apparently, VMware's virtual hard drive needs improvement to simulate something that looks like a real drive to the new libata.

I downloaded the Fedora 7 LiveCD and was able to install it into a VMWare Guest under Ubuntu. I'm using VMPlayer and used qemu to first create the virtual disk for the Fedora Install.

Below is the VMWare .vmx file I used. I downloaded the image onto my disk and did not burn a CD, but instead pointed ide1:0 to the file. It booted F7 from the LiveCD image and then I used the LiveCD to install to disk. Upon booting into the installed image, I installed all the additional packages I needed.

I've been able to install any OS I have tried so far with VMWare. (Currently using VMWare Workstation 5.5.2-build 29772). That includes: gentoo x86, kde4 livecd, vista x86, win xp pro, and more. If you have a unsupported linux OS you want to install, just select "other linux 2.6.x kernel" or "other linux kernel 2.6.x 64 bit", etc. from the menu in the new VM wizard. Like I said, I've yet to run into problems*. My host system is a fully up to date winxp pro box.

*that is, problems that i haven't been able to fix. The only problem i ran into was when installing vista.....and all i had to do was create 2 virtual CD drives, as described here: http://blog.eweek.com/blogs/eweek_labs/ ... 14521.aspx
