ATi GPU is getting hot in linux and a useful utility

#1 Post by festher » Mon Jul 09, 2007 4:38 pm

i found something useful in my search for an answer to why my GPU fan is running at medium speed and noise (~3400 rpm) even when the pc idle. i found a utility called gkrellm which display all my t60 temps out of the box - all you have to do is install gkrellm and click a few things in "sensorer - temperature" section. no long guides or fooling around with weird sudo commands or lm-sensor stuff - it just works. :)

anyway, now to give my ATI card the best odds regarding noise and temp i lowered the clock to a minimum with this command:

aticonfig --set-powerstate=1

You can check the result with "glxgears" if you want.

The GPU temp dropped from 68 to 60 - I dont remember my GPU temp in vista nor xp but i think it was about 45..
