I have a headless server running Redhat Linux 8 I need to setup Up2date but I seem to get an error. That an environment variable needs to be set. I was expecting it to connect to the redhat network and walk me through setting up an account.

I'm a newbie and this is up2date from the original redhat cds.

RedHat 8 is pretty old. I dumped that particular machine some years back. I have RedHat 7.3 and RedHat 9 machines and up2date doesn't work on either of them because they are so old. I think at one point RedHat was looking at subscription fees for up2date and maybe they implemented them.

In any event, try a newer version of Linux from RedHat or consider switching distributions.

I do not like the answer I gave you. I would prefer to assist in solving your problem, but like I say, up2date stopped working for me eons ago.

Very true, JD. up2date is now a paid subscription service. I have a RH9 server limping along because it's running a production web site and I can't update the machine. As soon as we move that site, though...

The best course of action of course is to backup your data, format the drive(s) and install a newer OS. RHEL 5 if it's a business or CentOS5 if you want to save some cash.

Porting your running applications, if you have any, is the prudent way to go, but it may be expensive. If you're just running the stuff that Red Hat packages up (like sendmail, apache, mysql) or things you can download new versions of, the process should be very smooth.

I've never used up2date, but what enviornment variable needs to be set?

RH8 in the field is not so bad. Why not use yum instead? Quick google search gives what looks like a nice guide:

apt has also been moved to RH8. You can get the modern LAMP stack and so on in many repos.
