Hi!

I'm thinking of bying a IBM THINKPAD T42 PM 1.6 512/40 DVD/CDW WLAN 14". Will I be abel to have both Windows and Linux on this one?

Also, how much extra weight does a secondary battery add?

Would be thankfull for some advice.

Sure, you can dual boot a T42 (I do it all the time on T41's). One thing though, you probably will have to blow away the IBM recovery partition to do it (I think). Because I work in a Corporate environment, we install our own Windows image and stuff - the IBM recovery partition is removed automatically.

You will have to modify your ks.config (if using RH) file to tell it not blow out the entire drive and you'll need to have a cleared out, unallocated part of the drive for linux and presumably you'll use the GRUB loader to handle which OS you boot from...

If you've never done this before, I'd ghost your drive in case you accidently nuke your windows partition and you need to restore it again.

Correct

The hidden partition will need to be removed. A lot of people re-install XP with the restore disks. Then use partition manager to change the size of the XP partition. Also, you can set the EXT3 and swap files at the same time for the Linux Install.

Then when you install Linux, you can use the already confugured hard drive, being fairly assured that the install wont blow away your XP !
