Ubuntu (Feisty) crashes on T60 frequently

#1 Post by peahen » Sun Aug 26, 2007 6:05 pm

I installed Feisty on my T60 over 4 months ago and it crashed many times meanwhile. There were no certain patterns for crash, but it mostly happened when graphics was a bit heavily loaded,e.g., when I view a PDF file using acroread and scroll up/down quickly, when I switch between terminals/applications frequently by pressing alt-tab, or when I played with some graphics software like VMD.

So my suspicion is something related to the video driver, but I have no clue of how to identify it and fix it. Any similar experience or any suggestions? Many thanks.

My T60 model is 2613-CTO and the here is what I got from fglxinfo:

display: :0.0 screen: 0
OpenGL vendor string: ATI Technologies Inc.
OpenGL renderer string: ATI Mobility Radeon X1300
OpenGL version string: 2.0.6334 (8.34.8)

3D drivers for ATI on Linux is said to be flakey. Using Beryl with some animation on those alt-tabs and scrolling?

It's not even with Beryl. Just the regular non-fancy gnome. Sometimes everything just frozen, just like memory crash. But I test the memory and it's fine. So i figured it must be due to the video driver.

btw, I still couldn't get Beryl to work by following this link.

Here is what glxinfo gives:

Did you run memtest86 for at least 24 hours?

Actually not yet. I only ran it for 2 hrs and got nothing then became impatient.

So it might be a memory issue? I did have two different brands of memory chips. One is original and the other is from Kingston. I knew there were some compatibility issue of putting Kingston memory on T60, but I'd thought I was lucky that i didn't have that problem. Perhaps it's too early to say that... :(

Try to run memtest at least overnight. Recently I found some memory that took 15 hours of testing before any problems showed up, and then there was a constant stream of errors....millions of them! I guess the ram needed to heat up before the errors showed.

I once had a similar issue on my old T41. It turned out to be a memory issue, but I had to run memtest86 for a really long time (>10h) to see any errors. Removing the offending memory module solved it for me.

ok the memory test has been running for consecutive 12 hrs and no error reported. Should I keep testing it?

update: It seems more likely to be the problem with ATI driver. reason for this is that I accidentally "uninstalled" the ATI driver and now fglrxinfo gives something like this
Xlib: extension "XFree86-DRI" missing on display ":0.0".
display: :0.0 screen: 0
OpenGL vendor string: Mesa project: www.mesa3d.org
OpenGL renderer string: Mesa GLX Indirect
OpenGL version string: 1.4 (1.5 Mesa 6.5.2)

So i assume the ati driver is no longer in use. Strangely the machine seems to become stable. (again it may be too early to say that but at least so far it did NOT crash upon the actions that used to screw things up when ATI driver was loaded.)

In fact I am more likely to believe it's a video card problem, because when booted in XP the machine had crashed a couple of times before. The problem was later solved by lowering the hardware acceleration. I am not sure if there is similar option in Linux.
