Today i try to run DSL live linux over my T40, its prestation are incredible:

Pro:

-very low heat
-no hard-disk usage (all the os charged in RAM memory)
-extraordianary fast
- no fan noise!!!
-battery

Versus:
-it's live
-no battery status information
-low possibility to install new programs to a non greek user
-no scrolling in the web pages

You can install it to the hard disk and then it will run even faster than it does now and you can install programs in it.
The DSL forums may be able to help you with the rest of the cons.
Alternatively you could try Puppy Linux http://www.puppylinux.org/user/viewpage.php?page_id=1
If you burn it as a multi-session disc it will save changes back to the cd when you shut down.

I tried slax a few days ago. Like DSL it can fully load into memory and there are quite a few add-on modules to download.

It is a no brainer. I got firefox with java connected over wireless wpa2 on my x41. Boots from usb flash into memory under a minute.

+1 for Puppy.
I like DSL but just can't get use to Dillo. Puppy comes with the SeaMonkey (Mozilla) browser. Any of them can be installed on a USB stick.
