New to Linux, need HELP setting up SLED 10 distro

Okay, I'm new to Linux, been messing around with it for about two weeks now and about ready to give up. Here's the deal:
I downloaded and installed the SLED 10 SP1 distro to install on my T60p. I followed the instructions here:
http://www.softwareinreview.com/cms/content/view/54/
I did pretty much everything recommended there on the installation, except that I didn't have a dedicated internet connection so I had to skip the setup for the online update service. I finished the setup and I can get into KDE Linux now but I'm having a hard time with the following:
1. Setting up an internet connection via my DSL account. I got it set up once, was able to access the Internet once but can't seem to reconnect. I can't find where I need to be to run the script or program that connects me to my DSL line.
2. Can't change the screen resolution from XGA to UXGA. Using YaST I got into the hardware section and configured the monitor as LCD, IBM LCD, IBM TFT, etc., reset the resolution to UXGA. I tried just about every alternative I could think of but every time I go back to the desktop and try to configure the Display the only option it shows is XGA.
3. Since I can't get the Internet connection set up I also can't download whatever updates I may need. Do I have to go back and reinstall all over again with a dedicated Internet connection just to take care of the online update service?
I'm eager to give Linux a chance, but, if I can't get past basic screen resolution changes and Internet connection setup I don't think it's for me. I know nothing about programming but have custom built my own desktops for years and am comfortable messing with most configuration settings in XP. If somebody can give me some help I would appreciate it.
thanks,
