According to Thinkwiki, laptop-mode should not be used on opensuse as it is already configured in /etc/sysconfig/powermanagement. You can see it in /etc/sysconfig Editor in Yast.

And does it work for you ? Does your hard drive spin down ?

I have not tried to use it since I mostly run Oracle databases on my Thinkpad, and have a very quiet 7k200 Hitachi drive installed. The stock drive that Windows XP came on is pretty noisy, and would be easy to tell if it was not being accessed.
