ThinkPad GDM theme

Hi,

I made a GDM theme in the ThinkPad style; it's available here.

Currently it looks best at 1024x768. I'm working on a higher resolution and widescreen version, but they may not be available for a couple weeks so I thought I'd post this now.

It looks nice, might use it if you make a higher resolution version.

Are you also looking into changing the boot screen?

Wow! This looks great .... I'm hoping to get my fingerprint reader working on my T43p and then I can integrate this login screen. Any ETA on the high-res one?

Great work so far!

I have a paper deadline on Nov 7, so sometime after that.

I hadn't thought of doing a boot splash, but that's a good idea. :)

Pardon me for jumping in, but I had some free time on my hands and vectorized the background image. I also blew it up to wide.

Since I now have all the material for this as SVG files, I should be able to build a GDM theme which not only scales to any resolution but also extends to widescreen resolutions.

My idea of extending is keeping the stuff in the middle – “Technologies and Design”, ”ThinkPad notebooks” and the vertical line – centered but moving the stylized keyboard and the IBM logo outwards as seen on the second image.

I also have the ThinkPad logo and the Lenovo logo as vectors. So if anyone wants a variant with these… It's possible to do that.

@Mike:

Do you want me to send you the files so you can build the GDM theme yourself or is it okay if I finish your work? ;)

[edit] Screenshots removed - check latest post for actual screens

Woow great work Alexander. Hoping to see your (or miletl's) package soon. Resolution-independence sounds great.

Thanks.

I'll finish it then. I just have problems getting gdmthemetester to run. Looks like I have to setup a virtual machine for testing… :|

What I did was ssh'd in to the ThinkPad and edited the theme file, and then ctrl-alt-backspace to test. Not the best way, but works. I guess another option would be to use a tty <7 instead of ssh.

I finally figured out how to run gdmgreeter in a Xnest so I could test and finish the theme.

And here it is!

TechnologiesAndDesign.tar.bz2 (55,820 bytes)

As you can see in these screenshots I left everything else the way it was. I just replaced the background with SVGs so it now scales and expands to almost any resolution.

Almost? Yes, an aspect ratio wider than 16:10 or narrower than 5:4 will look funny. But we're talking ThinkPads here. The only aspect ratios we have are 4:3 (1024×768, 1400×1050, 1600×1200, 2048×1536) and 16:10 (1280×800, 1440×900, 1680×1050, 1920×1200).

Bootsplash, huh?

If all distributions would use the same splash software and if this particular software would support SVG that would be real fun… ;)

Maybe I'll make a usplash theme in the future. I'm bored by the default ubuntu usplash.

Maybe something like this with the blue line thingy as progress bar…

That's pretty cool! Thanks!! I'll try to get it going as soon as Mint goes final.

Using the login screen on my X61s (Ubuntu 7.10), I did not know that logging in could look this cool. Thanks for all the work on this guys! I will be eagerly awaiting a boot screen, maybe even a grub menu?
*crosses fingers*

I liked that picture enough to mess with it a little and use it as a background.

If anyone is interested here is that image 4:3 1024x768 with the IBM Thinkpad logo added to the top right (I moved it down a little so it would not be covered by my top panel):

Here is the same image with the IBM logo at the very top right:

Nice theme, except that it doesn't really fit the text for password or finger swiping :)
