Thinkpad T60 Ubuntu 7.10 Wireless Question

I installed a Ubuntu Gutsy Gibbons 7.10 two days ago and I am still attempting in getting the wireless to work.

Could someone explain to me how to get my wireless card to work? In network-manager it detects my router "lynksys" but when I fill in the information for the WEP, it'll just continously loop never connecting. Few minutes later it'll ask for the password again. I even set the router to open with no password needed and it still does not connect even though it has a strong reception to it. Any ideas? Has anyone else experienced this problem?

Do you have the intel pro wireless card? I didn't have problem with my installation. Wireless just works on my T60. My T61 is having the same problem on WPA.

Nope, it's the cheap Thinkpad 802.11abg wireless card, not the Intel Pro.

I have exactly the same card and WiFi worked without any additional configuration out-the-box on my Ubuntu 7.10.

Have you tried connecting to a different router? Also, make sure if you're using WEP/WPA the password is added to the keyring of allowed passwords.

keyring? I'm sorry I am not familiar with that. I did not receive any keyring request. I went to System>Administration>Network and unticked the roaming mode and just entered the information. My router is WEP but even if I have WEP turned off... it still does not work.

My Atheros card in my T60 worked right out of the box with Kubuntu 7.10 and Mint 4.0 (based on 7.10) with both open and WPA networks. I leave mine in roaming mode and just pick the network I want to connect to. Maybe you had a hiccup during your install.

I'm glad that it worked out of the box for you. Unfortunately, that is not the case with my laptop.

I took a look at kubuntu and mint but no such luck. In fact, I set up another wireless router that I had sitting around... the wireless connects to it but it won't retrieve an ip address. I even did the following to see if I could pull an ip address but no such luck:

This may not be a huge help, but theres a network manager bug that results in similar symptoms (eternal loops during connecting) on wpa networks. This is absolutely annoying and it renders my wifi hardware useless on my home network.

I understand that your wireless is not working properly. The fact that some others are not having the same problems you are with the same software and hardware leads me to think that

Maybe you had a hiccup during your install.

Did you MD5sum the ISO before burning it? Could your optical drive be glitchy?
Sometimes in an effort to fix things I end up breaking them even further. Sometimes it is quicker and easier to just reinstall and see if the problem goes away. It only takes about 15 minutes to do a reinstall.

For what it's worth, I had the same experience with my T42 with the IBM / Atheros abg (series I) card. Both Ubuntu 7.10 and Mint 4.0 didn't seem to recognise the card (Ubuntu had it in the Network devices but it couldn't connect; Mint didn't even have it in Network devices). Mandriva 2008, on the other hand, "worked right out of the box". I'll admit, I'm a complete Linux noob and I just ran each of these as a 'live CD' to see what they did. I liked Ubuntu / Mint (gnome?) better than Mandriva (kde?), but if I have to dig too deep into the guts of Linux, I'm not sure it's worth the effort for me . . . which is a fairly large disappointment. Anyway, I'd be interested to hear if you find a solution for the IBM abg wireless card.

I un-installed the gnome Network Manager application and installed Wicdhttp://wicd.sourceforge.net.

I then attached a Netgear 511T card to my laptop and it still would not connect to my wireless router on WEP. I set my wireless router to WPA, and BAM instant connection including IP. I then returned my wireless router to WEP and after that the Netgear 511T card connects to the router.

Yet, if I attempt the same with the IBM/Thinkpad Atheros card (internal), nothing. Nor WEP/WPA work.

I'm still messing with my live CDs--I want to see how these things work (or not) before I install (am I a glutton for punishment?

). Strangely(?), luckily (?)--whatever it be--I got my wireless to work with Ubuntu. I was at my brother-in-law's place where 'Apple' is the flavour of the month. Anyway, I popped in the Ubuntu CD to show him and the wireless connected to his Airport Extreme w/o a hitch: just entered the WPA2 password and I was in. When I got home to my Linksys WRT54GS (running dd-wrt firmware and WPA2) I was able to connect as well. HOWEVER, it does not work with Mint . . . In Control Center / Hardware Information (aka Device Manager), on the 82801 Mobile PCI Bridge there is a device: AR5212 802.11abg NIC (which I assume is the Atheros card) and 82504EP Gigabit Ethernet Controller. The ethernet controller has a subentry called "network interface" whereas the former has none. How do I 'enable' the wireless card? It does not show up as a device in Network Settings; only Wired Connection and Modem Connection appear.

I also have good experiences with Wicd (I am using Xubuntu). Conects faster, in particular after resume. Also you do not need the keyring manager. Nice graphical interface.
